Abstract
Aluminium is digested in an acid chloride pref HCl or aqs aluminium chloride to form a sol contg. wt ratio Al : Cl of 1.0 to 1.5:1. Aqs soln of hexamethylene tetramine separately prepd is added to the sol at below gelation temp. to give a hexamethylene tetramine: chloride mol ratio of 1 to 1.25:4, and final Al-content of 6-10 wt%. The mixture is dispersed in oil at 120-220 degrees F and retained until spherical gel particles form; these are aged in oil at superatmos press and 250-500 degrees F to keep the water as a fluid and complete the hydrolysis of residual hexamethylene tetramine. The particles are finally washed, dried and calcined, yielding alumina spheres of low bulk density, good corrosion and attrition resistance, suitable for use as catalyst (carrier) s and adsorbents.
