Abstract

In a spark, mass spectrometer for the analysis of impurities in solids, of the known type having two electrodes fabricated in the material to be analysed, mounted in an evacuated enclosure and connected to a high frequency electrical energy source, the distance between the electrodes being variable, the spark is stabilised by a circuit for detecting the voltage across the electrodes and a further circuit for detecting the current passing through the electrodes, the output of which in turn is connected to a device for adjusting the distance between the electrodes so as to maintain a constant ratio of applied voltage to current through the electrodes.
