Mixts. of Cl2 and SO2, opt. contg. air, are separated by contact with magnetite, FeO or siderite, to bind Cl2 and O2, then Cl2 is recovered from the Fe chloride formed from Fe source used by thermal decompsn. in O2 or air atmos. None of these materials reacts with SO2 or catalyses its conversion to SO3 in presence of O2 or air below 250 degrees C, but all react with Cl2 and O2, so that economic separation is possible.
