Abstract

Gaseous sulphides (e.g. SO2 and H2S) are selectively absorbed from gaseous mixtures containing then by contacting the mixture with a solvent cpsn. consisting of (a) 5-95 wt.% of at least 1 N-contg. cpd. of formula:- (where R=H, Me, Et or Pr; R1=>=1 alkylene group contg. 2-4C's; R2 and R3=Me, Me, Et, Pr, Bu, amyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl; n= 1-20, a and b= 0-2 and a+b is not 2 or (II) R(OR5)c 2-d(R6)dNCxH2x(NR4CxH2x)yN(R6)d (R5O)cR) 2-d (R as above; R4 = H, Me, Et, Pr, Bu or (-R5O)c H; R5=R1 above; R6=R2 above; c= 1-2, d = 0 or 1 such that the cpd. II contains at least 1 oxyalkylene group; x= 2-4 and y= 0-8) or (II) H-(OR1)x NA. (where R1 is as above; x= 1-20 A is a divalent rad). The solvent also contains (b) 0-90 wt.% of a polyoxyalkyl cpd. of formula:- HO-(R1O)-y R7 (R7=H, Me or Pr and y= 2-25) and (c) 2-90 wt.% of water. The sulphides are retained by this solvent.
