Abstract

The extruder includes various sections of screw feed and pumping and in addition at least one element formed from a core with axial spaced ribs rotating within a cylindrical chamber, the height of the ribs being less than 20% of the air space. The use of the supplementary mixing section assures satisfactory gelation of the product after the mixing section and eliminates powder. The length of the pumping section is pref. 2-4 times the dia., the length of the kneading section 1 - 2 times the dia. and that of the metering section 3 - 5 times the dia. There may be alternate screw and ribbed sections, and the latter may also be of cylindrical or conical shape.
