Abstract

Electrolytic cell with lithium negative electrode, metal chloride positive electrode and electrolyte of LiAlCl4 in phenylchloroformate. Mamimum conductivity (3.3 x 10-3 ohm-1 cm-1) is obtained for a molar solution which is unaffected by traces of AlCl3, does not dissolve CuCl or AgCl (the preferred positive electrodes), does not degrade to form gaseous products during use. Can be used in sealed batterise e.g. for watches.
