Abstract

The process of 768 450 is modified in that the organic cpd. therein is replaced in whole or part by an ester contg. at most 5C atoms or by an inorganic salt having a cation of valency at least 2, and drying the gel in air to obtain a porous body or firing it at a temp. near the softening point for a time sufficient to consolidate it into a solid silicate glass article. The ester(s) may be methyl and/or ethyl formate and/or acetate. The salt may be a carbonate, hydroxide, borate, and/or phosphate. The pore size may be 100-20.000A, and total porosity may be 30-85%. The materials are used as fillers and porous supports for impregnation.
