Abstract

Carrier particles which are free from non-specific binding sites are produced by treating formalin-treated bacterial (pref. E. coli) cells in aqs. medium with cyanogen halide, pref. BRCN. When coupled with an antigen they give antigen-sensitised carrier particles which can only agglutinate in the presence of an antibody specific for this antigen and therefore useful in the diagnosis of diseases giving rise to the antibody. Use of formalin-treatment bacterial cells gives a highly specific agglution reaction, thus reducing the incidence of false-positive test results.
