Abstract

In a high pressure synthetic of urea, aq. NH4 carbamate (I) is recycled by pressurising and stripping with feed CO2, pref. at about synthesis reactor pressure. This is carried out in a heat exchanger, externally heated to decompose (I), giving a high pressure off-gas contg. CO2 and NH3 and a discardable liquid effluent. Feed NH3 is pref. added to the off-gas to give an NH3:CO2 ratio of 2:1 and this is passed through a heat-exchanger to heat effluent from the reactor, thus decomposing (I) in the effluent and giving an off-gas which is converted to the aq. (I) soln. This results in the condensation of molten (I), to produced a gas-liquid mixture of low water content. This condensed (I) is passed to the synthesis reactor. Alternatively, the enriched off-gas is cooled in heat-exchange with liq. water to produce steam used to heat the synthesis effluent and decompose (I). Advantages are avoidance of urea decomposition by stripping operations, reduced water content of recycled (I), conversion rate raised from 67-75%, reduction in reactor vol.% a 25% reduction in energy required for evaporation.
