Abstract

A carbon product of extreme hardness approaching diamond good electrical conductivity and possessing a structure of controlled porosity, is produced by burning a sugar esp. saccharose at =250 degrees C to form a caramel. This material after cooling is crushed to a fine powder, packed into a mould and heated at 800-1200 degrees C to cause auto-agglomeration. The product has a partially metallic appearance and contains a system of interconnecting porosity. It is suitable for use as cell electrodes, electric motor brushes, granular carbon for telephones, abrasive powder etc. Great hardness is achieved at relatively low temp. without the application of high pressures.
