Abstract
A suspension of inactivated Brucella bacteria (e.g. B. abortus, melitensis or suis) in which 10-50% of the bacterial cells are whole, the remainder being a lysate, are useful in increasing the non-specific immunity of an organism to which it is administered. It is esp. useful in the treatment of tumours. In an example, cells of Brucella abortus B 19 were cultivated on a solid medium for 72 hrs. at 37 degrees C. The bacteria were sepd., washed, suspended in distilled water and inactivated by heating. Ultrasonic treatment ruptured 85% of the cells and finally the suspension could be treated with an antiseptic, such as sodium methiolate. Administration of this to mice (500 mu g dry wt., i.p./mouse) prolonged their life when injected with Erhlichs carcinoma.
