Abstract

In composite films of plastic and Al, Sn or some other pref. non-oxidisable metal, the metal is bonded pref. by direct contact to one or both faces of the plastic film, pref. by application as metallic dust. Prod. is esp. intended for packaging of edible liq., esp. oils of plasticized PVC, the metal being sufficiently thin to survive the flexibility of the pack and its movements. The metal layer prevents losses of volatile components from the contents, or flavour transfer to or from the plastic formulation and also acts as a UV barrier; if applied to both surfaces of the film, it may inhibit film embrittlement.
