Abstract

An alcohol ROH (where R is opt. branched 8-12C alkyl, esp. 8-10C alkyl) is reacted, pref. at 60-65 degrees C, with P2O5 in a mol. ratio of 1.7-2.5 mols. alcohol per mol. P2O5, esp. 1.8-2.3 mols. alcohol per mol. P2O5 and the resulting phosphate ester is neutralised, to form the alkali(ne earth)metal salts, e.g. with NaOH or KOH. The phosphate esters are then dried, e.g. on a drum. A typical product is obtained by reacting P2O5 with 2-ethylhexanol, followed by neutralisation with NaOH and drying, this 2-ethylhexylphosphate Na salt being used to stabilise polymers such as acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene when the presence of water in the resin comp. cannot be tolerated.
