Abstract

Carboxylic acids, esp. mono- and dicarboxylic acids are prepd by oxidative cleavage of alpha-glycols in aqs. alkaline med. using as oxidising agent, either mono-persulphate or dipersulphate anion, in the presence of a metallic element. The process gives similar yields to prior art processes using ozone, as oxidising agent, without the formation of highly explosive ozonides.
