Abstract

A cooling mixture consists of urea, a nitrogen contg. salt of negative heat of soln. and a solvent (water or an alcohol). NH4NO3 is the prefd. salt but NH4CNS, NH4. HCO3 and ammonium oxalate may be used. The prefd. compsn. contains 300-700 g/l urea and 1000 g/l NH4NO3. The mixture gives lower temps. and more rapid cooling than the individual components alone (e.g. 80 ml water, 80 g urea and 80 g NH4NO3 reached - 13 degrees C in 6 mins). Cooling is achieved either by adding solvent to the dry mixed cpds. or by mixing solns.
