Abstract

Dihydrooxathiazinones of formula (I): (where R1 is H, (1-20C) alkyl, (6-40C) aryl or (2-4C) acyl, and R2 is (1-20C) alkyl or (6-10C) aryl, or R1+R2 forms an opt. substd. isocyclic ring) and salts of I, are of use as synthetic sweeteners, surfactants and synthetic intermediates. (I) are prepd. by (a) reaction of OCNSO2X (X = F or O-aryl) with a cpd. R1AR2 where A is -CH2CO-, -CH(CO2H)CO- or -C=C-, and (b) hydrolytic ring-closure of the intermediate: (R2COCH(R1)CONHSO2X) with water and a base at pH 5-12.
