Abstract

An electrolyte soln. of uranyl nitrate is flowed through an elongated, parallelepipedic cell which has substantially parallel electrodes. The anode is a thin Pt foil and the cathode is constituted by a flow of Hg along the base of the cell circulated via a closed cycle. The electrolyte is flow co-currently with the Hg and has a residence time sufficient to ensure complete reduction of U(VI) to U(IV). Circulation prevents polarisation in the cell and stagnation of electrolyte so that little re-oxidation occurs. The U(IV) nitrate is used as a reductant for separating Pu and U from used nuclear fuel elements.
