Abstract

The fibres are made from carbonisable organic polymers (esp. copolyacrylonitrile) by (a) irradiating the polymer with UV of wavelength 200-600 n.m. (esp. 240-400 n.m.), (b) simultaneously heating the polymer in an oxidising atmosphere at 150-300 degrees C and (c) subsequently carbonising the polymer in a non-oxidising atmosphere at 700-3300 degrees C (esp. 1000-3000 degrees C). The oxidation stage with UV illumination gives carbon fibres with high Youngs modulus.
