Abstract

Production is carried out in two or more acid or basic oxysteel convertor-type furnaces without protective coatings on the furnace linings. One or more furnaces produce a maximum number of melts per day whilst another furnace is being newly lined. The latter furnace is also operated after receiving a new lining to produce a maximum number of melts per day whilst another furnace is being relined. Between the relining stages each furnace is operated to produce fewer than the maximum melts, in succession so that steel production periods of one furnace are partly overlapped by those of the other furnaces.
