Prepn. of salts of 1,1'-disubstd.-4,4'-bipyridylium salts. each substituent contg. up to 10C atoms in which a corresponding N-substd. pyridinium salt is reacted in basic medium with anions contg. the R1(R2)P-O - and R1(R2)P-S -anions (where R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, or aralkyl, or R'O-,R'S-,R'2N-, R'2P-, where R' is hydrocarbyl or H if radical is R'2N or R' may be cyclic) and the resulting product is oxidised.
