Abstract

A toughened synthetic resin is obtained by polymerising a mixture of a vinyl aromatic monomer e.g. styrene and a vinyl cyanide monomer e.g. acrylonitrile, with an aqueous emulsion of an unsatd. rubber (0.01-1.25 p.b.wt) using a free radical initiator e.g. an alkali metal persulphate and a mercapton polymerisation regulator. 20-80% of the monomers are reacted using part of the mercaptan, the remainder being added and polymerization continued until 90% monomers have reacted. The rubber is pref. a butadiene polymer and has an average particle size 0.2-0.6 mu.
