Abstract

The degree of pollution in a lubricating oil, or concentration of suspended particles in other liquids, is estimated by visual comparison of the amount of light obscured by the liquid and by an optical filter which is given a value grading. The instrument comprises a viewing box in which a test tube of the liquid is placed next to a crystalline grating and both are viewed from one side whilst a beam of light shines on the other side. A selection of optical filters is then interposed between the light source and the grating until the light through the liquid is matched. The instrument is simple and portable, and the method is rapid.
