Abstract

Long fuel elements are arranged in parallel groups with narrow gaps between the elements and are clamped rigidly together, the gaps being defined by bosses on the elements, by cam/follower operated devices, the cams being moved axially by rods extending through the core shielding; the follower movement is transverse to the axis, clamping together the groups which are each separately jacketed, the clamps being external to the jackets. The followers are spring loaded against the cams and mechanicall limit stops prevent excessive clamping forces from being applied.
