Abstract

Steamand fuel are introduced into steam reforming anode to form H2, using molten electrolyte. H2 formed passes through surface of anode into electrolyte and reacts with OH ions in this to form H2O, which is electrolysed at cathode, forming H2. Pref. electrolyte temp. is 400-600 degrees C, potential at electrodes 0.95V and molar ratio of steam to C in fuel 2.2-5.0:1. Suitable electrolyte is a salt, pref. alkali metal hydroxide. High purity H2 can be produced at low cost.
