Abstract
These groups have formula -N(CN)-C(R1)(R2)-C(R3)(R4)R5 where R1,R2,R3,R4 and R5 are atoms or groups; is not 1 R is an activating electronegative group and the remainder are H or (substituted) (cyclo)aliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic hydrocarbon groups or heterocyclic groups, or any 2 of the R groups may be joined to form a cyclic structure. These derivs. esp. are QXn (I) where Q is a polyvalent residue of an organic polycyanamide or a partial dimerisation or trimerisation product thereof, after removal of the NH.CN groups, and n is not 2. Many are polymerisable to clear, hard insoluble, non-melting resins, useful in protective coatings, impregnating textiles, mouldings or laminates. They have higher glass transition temperatures that the corresponding polycyanamides, and better adhesion to substrates; they are resistant to chemicals and oxidation. (I) are storage-stable liquids or low-melting solids.
