Abstract
High molecular weight polyesters are prepared by condensing the bis-glycol esters of organic dicarboxilic acids and 2-10C glycols (or their low molecular weight prepolymers) in the presence of nitrogen-containing germanium compounds which have been prepared by dissolving germanium oxide in a mixture of water and a volatile C1-10 aliphatic or 3-8C cycloaliphatic monoamine. In particular 0.005 to 0.1% by weight of the Ge compound (calculated as GeO2) is used. Specifically the polyesters are based on terephthalic acid and 2-8C glycols. The polymers produced are colourless. Other metal salt catalyst systems discolour the polymer e.g. Sb compounds-light grey, Ti compounds-light yellow. Zn salt catalysts lower the heat stability of the polymer melt and promote degradation. Ge catalysts are known, e.g. Ge or GeO2 (US Patent 2,578,660), amorphous GeO2 (Belg. Patent 659,341) and Ge alkoxides (Belg. Patent 600,111), but reaction conditions are heterogeneous. The homogeneous conditions obtained with the new catalysts reduces the residual glycol content in the final polymer and the polymers have a higher melting point and an improved light stability. Uses are for fibres, films and moulded products.
