Abstract

In the presence of thermally ionisable cyclic or aliphatic polyfunctional organic compounds or agents containing one or more radicals in terminal position, or in a branch position, optionally also having one or more double bonds, as modifying agents, by heating to at least 100 degrees C. in the molten state and by compounding under high pressure, preferably in a closed system. Plasticisers e.g. butyl stearate, dibutyl adipate may be added to reduce the modulus of elasticity. The polymeric compositions may also have admixed a monomer(s) which may be injected into the mixer to be compounded with the granular or pulverulent polymer(s). Modified polymers or graft copolymers may be obtained in about 90 to 150 secs. whilst conventional polymerisation methods require up to 18 hours or more. Modification may be effected at any stage of production (polymerisation), working-up or regeneration of polyolefins. The modifying agent may be added at any stage. The characteristics of the (co)polymers may be closely controlled by the process; ageing is reduced.
