Abstract

Colourless, solvent-soluble arylesters for stabilising org. materials (A) against light (of 280-400 mm. region) and heat effects, of formula (II): (where R, R1' = H or 1-12C alkyl; R3, R2' = H or 1-12C alkyl, hal., OH, or OR4; R2, R3' = H or 1-12C alkyl or YR4; where R4 = 1-12C alkyl or (where R3" = H, 1-12C alkyl, hal., or OH; R2" = 1-12C alkyl or OH); X, X' = H, OR6 or 1-12C alkyl; Y = O or S; R6 = H or CH3. In (III): R1, R2, R3 are as above; Z = hal. esp. Cl, or OR5; R5 = 1-4C alkyl) are made by reacting cpd. (III): with the phenol (IV):- (where is not 1 radical X or X1 = OH, is not two of the radicals R1, R2, R3 = alkyl, and is not 1 of these, pref. R =t-butyl). Specifically: If (III) is an acid halide or an ester then the reaction is done at 50-120 (80-100) degrees C, in an inert solvent (pref. at 70-180 degrees C for an ester) in the presence of an acid or alk. catalyst. The pref. mol. ratio (III): (IV) = 1:1 when (IV) is monofunctional, and 2:1 when it is difunctional. The products are given a neutral wash in an inert solvent and recryst. from alcohol, they have definite m.pts.
