Abstract

The two principal methods of passing the upright tube through the heating/hardening zone, using suspension gear or support tables which can be raised and lowered and rotated, fail to harden the whole tube. The invention combines the two, the support table taking over from the suspension gear after most of the tube body has passed through the ring of heaters and maintaining the same rate of revolution through the heating zone. The whole tube is thus evenly heat-treated. The heating elements can be inside or outside the tube and are gas burners, electric radiant elements or induction coils. The tubes are quenched either by water or compressed air issuing from annular spray heads following the heating zone or in a container filled with coolant in which the support table is located, the latter being lowered when the tube is controlled by t.
