Abstract

A polymerisable composition contains alkenes, vinyl(idene) halides, vinyl esters, aromatic or heterocyclic alkenyl compounds, unsaturated nitriles, unsaturated organic acids, unsaturated organic esters or mixtures of polyester resins and polymerisable vinyl monomers, and a radical-liberating initiator. The initiator has formula: (R")3-C-N=N-R', where R" is a lower alkyl or phenyl group, not more than one phenyl group being present, and R' is chosen from a large number of specified gps. The compounds are suitable not only as polymerisation initiators, but as hardeners for polyester resins, initiators for chemical reactions, blowing agents for foamed synthetics and selective oxidising agents.
