Abstract

Vermiculite with particles containing fewer lamellae than the initial particles are prepared by submitting exfoliated vermiculite to a shearing action in a pulveriser. The sub-divided exfoliated vermiculite has width: thickness ratio of at least 3:1, the maximum average width being 6.35 mm. Used, with a binder, as a sealant or coating compsn. In such a coating the flat particles overlap and adjoin so as to render the surface impermeable to gas and liquids; or using a suitable binder may be obtained a flexible coating suitable for articles which slowly expand and contract with heat, e.g. boilers.
