Abstract

Prodn. of (meth)acrylic acid by leading a polyoxymethylene diester R-CO-O-(CH2O)-xCO-R (I) where x = 1-3 and R = methyl or ethyl, in the vapour phase at 180-450 deg.C (290-400 deg.C) over a suitable catalyst (II). Catalysts (II) may be (i) an inert carrier such as charcoal, asbestos, silica gel etc., impregnated with oxides, hydroxides or carbonates of metals of grp. Ia (esp. Li Na or K), grp. IIa (esp. Mg, Ca or Ba), boron or Al, or (ii) natural or synthetic aluminosilicates, molecular sieves, Ca phosphate, Mg phosphate, Mg silicate or Al2O3. The catalyst may be activated before use by heating at 300-600 deg.C in the pres. of steam and/or air.
