Abstract

In a teleprinter system comprising two subscribers in half-duplex connection, each subscriber has a unit as shown in which the transmission side is blocked during reception and vice versa. Serial data from the transmitter sk passes via gate SGO to unit EO where it is converted to parallel form. The data may be ciphered at VI, and is serialized at SL from which it passes to line. When a signal is to be transmitted, bi-stable SS is set. This sets unit MVS which indicates the present operating state. When unit EO has cycled once, SS is reset and unit SL is started. When SL has cycled once a pulse passes via delay S and gate GS, now enabled since SS is reset, to reset MVS. When set, unit MVS inhibits receiving gate SGL so that no signals can be received from the line for about one character time longer than the duration of the input from sk. A similar circuit on the receiving side, feeding teleprinter EM, blocks the transmission side during reception. In the case of synchronous working gate SGS is inhibited when the transmitter sk is providing filler signals. When signals are to be ciphered or deciphered by units VI, VII, unit MVH causes gates SGO and SGL to be blocked during the transmission of a " start of enciphering " signal.
