Abstract

1,193,838. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. REALISATIONS ULTRASONIQUES. 28 July, 1967 [5 Aug., 1966], No. 34925/67. Heading B5K. An ultrasonic welding device is provided with means for displacing a welding head 5 towards parts 1, 2 to be welded and to determine its position at the beginning of its contact with the part 1 and means for limiting to a predetermined amount the further displacement of the head 5 in the direction towards the part 1 from the said position. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a plastics cover 1 is welded on to a plastics box 2 by the head 5 carried by an ultrasonically vibratable member 4 connected to a magnetostrictive transducer 6. The member 4 is supported at a node of vibration by a flange 7 fixed to a tubular member 8 having a lower flange 9 which carries an electromagnet 11. The member 8 is displaceable through a ball-bearing slide 10. A dial indicator 13 is provided with a vertically displaceable rod 14 carrying a blade 14 of soft magnetic material attractable by the electromagnet 11 when the latter is excited. In operation, the position of an electric contact 20 is preset so that a needle 21 touches it when the rod 14 has undergone a predetermined displacement. The member 8 is lowered and the flange 9 closes a microswitch 19 and, after a time delay, determined by a relay 17, the latter closes a contact 16 so that the blade 15 is attracted by the electromagnet 11. Simultaneously, the head 5 is ultrasonically vibrated. During the welding, the head 5 continues to move slightly downwards until the needle 21 touches the contact 20 and the ultrasonic vibrations are immediately cut-off by a circuit 22 which after a time predetermined by a timing mechanism therein moves the member 8 upwardly towards its rest position. In another embodiment (not shown), the dial indicator and the electromagnet are omitted and the member 8 and the support 3 are each provided with an adjustable stop. The ultrasonic vibrations are started when the welding head contacts the upper part to be welded and are arrested when the stops contact each other. In a further embodiment (not shown), the means to cut off the ultrasonic vibrations when the two stops contact each other is omitted and the vibrations are produced during a time determined by a timing mechanism using fixed stops to limit the penetration of the welding head.
