Abstract
A semi-conductor device which is both electroluminescent and photo-sensitive for use in a two way optical communication system comprises a PN junction device of gallium arsenide doped with silicon in the N region and zinc in the P region. It is preferred to operate the system with the receiving device 30-100 DEG C. hotter than the transmitting device.
