936,393. Photomechanical relief printing- plates. K.-H. KRETZER. Dec. 16, 1959, No. 42794/59. Class 98 (2). A process of producing a relief printing-plate for colour printing from a screen positive produced from a photomechanically corrected halftone negative comprises exposing to light through such screen positive a metallic base carrying a layer of light sensitive material which is rendered removable by photo-chemical action, removing the exposed portions of the layer, and subjecting the base with the remaining portions of the layer thereon to a partial single stage etching process which is ineffective on the non- exposed portions. In the example the plate is a zinc plate; the light-sensitive layer is composed of a solution of 4-[naphthoquinone-(1,2)- diazide - (2) - sulphonyloxy - (5)] - 2 - hydroxy - acetophenone, m-cresol-formaldehyde resin and sesame oil in ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, optionally containing methyl violet BB to increase contrast; and the solvent used to remove the exposed portions is a 2% aqueous solution of trisodium phosphate containing 10 to 15 volume per cent of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. An advantage claimed for the process is that colour and tone value corrections can be effected on the screened photographic positive rather than on the printing plate.
