Abstract

[Also in Groups XXIII and XXXIV] A bearing arrangement for a high-speed turbine shaft, comprising a plurality of sleeve members each having an axial lengh greater than its outside diameter coaxially disposed in a housing and two rows of balls co-operating with races in the shaft and sleeve members, has means for the sleeve members spaced 'axially apart and means, exerting a radial force on the exterior cylindrical surface of one of the sleeve members so as to fix its axial position. The invention is described with reference to a turbine driving a grinding spindle, Fig. 1, in which a turbine comprising an impulse wheel 12 and a reaction wheel 14 drive a shaft 16. The wheel 12 is formed by a number of radial channels 36 and the wheel 14 by a number of tangential channels 42. Air is supplied to the wheel 12 through channels 30, 32 and 34 formed in discs 20, 22 forming the turbine casing. The major portion of the pressure drop e.g. two-thirds, is utilized in the impulse wheel. The shaft 16 is formed with grooves 62, forming an inner race for the balls 60. The outer races are formed by grooves or offsets 58 formed in the ends of two bearing sleeves 56. The sleeves 56 are a, sliding fit in the housing 52 and are forced apart by a spring 64. The, axial length of each of the bearing sleeves is greater than the outside diameter of the sleeve. One of the sleeves 56 is locked in position by means of a screw 66. A lubricator cup is fitted at 70.
