Abstract
The invention relates to a process for preparing 3- acetoxy-2-methylbenzoyl chloride, proceeding from a reaction between 3-acetoxy-2-methylbenzoic acid and thionyl chloride. According to the invention, 3-acetoxy-2- methylbenzoic acid is gradually added to a mixture of thionyl chloride and dimethylformamide, in which the latter functions as a catalyst and which mixture does not contain significant quantities of another solvent, while maintaining the temperature of the mixture below 45degreeC. When the reaction has taken place, the excess of thionyl chloride is removed, for example by evaporation and by passing an inert gas, such as nitrogen, into the reaction mixture.
