Abstract

A mobile communication system comprises a mobile station (MS) and an interworking function (IWF) for establishing a high-speed point-to-point data connection to a data network access point (2), which supports a multilink point-to-point protocol PPP. The point-to-point connection comprises a first subleg between the mobile station (MS) and the interworking function (IWF) and a second multilink PPP subleg between the interworking function (IWF) and the access point (2). The first subleg between the mobile station (MS) and the interworking function (IWF) is allocated to as many subchannels or sub-traffic streams as there are channels (e.g. time slots of 64 kbit/s) on the second subleg between the IWF and the access point of another telecommunications network, such as an IAP server. Each channel of the fixed network connection as well as the PPP link payload carried by the channel are adapted to the allocated mobile network subchannel or substream so that the PPP payload is transmitted as such over the whole point-to-point connection between the multilink PPP protocol functions located in the mobile station and IAP server. This allows to avoid placing of PPP and multilink PPP protocols in the interworking function IWF.
