Abstract

The invention relates to a fire-retardant composition and to a process for preparing it. The fire-retardant composition contains a reaction product of water glass and an acid and also magnesium chloride in a quantity of 10-10,000 parts by weight as compared with 100 parts by weight of water glass. The fire-retardant composition also contains water, magnesium oxide, magnesium sulphate, aluminium hydroxide and/or titanium oxide. According to the process, the composition is prepared by mixing water glass with acid in order to form a reaction product from the water glass and acid, after which the said reaction product is mixed with a magnesium chloride-containing mixture, with a processable fire-retardant composition being obtained. The acid which is caused to react with the water glass is an inorganic or organic acid, preferably phosphoric acid. The invention results in a fire-retardant substance which possesses an extremely good fire-retardant ability, and the substance is easily handled during preparation.
