Abstract

The HDTV picture shown on a screen appears soft while, as a result of the spatial undersampling which is carried out at the transmission end and as a result of the HDMAC coder's convolution-preventing filter, neither the transmitted nor the received HDMAC picture contains as large frequency components as the original high resolution studio picture. In addition the size of the frequency components depends on the movement content of the image area. The picture can be sharpened in such a way that the luminance output signal of the HDMAC coder is filtered both horizontally and vertically by FIR filters 22, 27. Before the filtering is carried out, samples which represent dark image areas are removed from the filters' input signals. The bandpass filtering signals obtained are added as middle frequency components to the original luminance signal in the summation devices 25, 210. The filtering varies depending upon which interpolator branch of the HDMAC decoder is connected to the output of the coder. <IMAGE>
