Abstract

This invention relates to an improved process for producing gypsum calcium sulphate dihydrate flakes from pulverulent gypsum calcium sulphate dihydrate which has been obtained when desulphurating flue gas by means of the wet limestone process. The size and strength of the flakes is sufficient to enable the gypsum calcium sulphate dihydrate to be handled and processed in the customary apparatus which is used generally by manufacturers of wood fibre boards and other within the building industry. The calcium sulphate dihydrate intermediate from the desulphuration process is concentrated to approx. 5-12% by weight and then compressed into a thin sheet under a compression load of 1.6-5.9 tons/cm per sheet width (4-15 tons per linear inch). A linear speed of 0.15-0.76 metre (0.5-2.5 feet) per second is maintained during the compression, with the dwell time during the compression being approx 0.2-1.2 seconds. An elevated temperature is maintained during the compression process for the purpose of increasing the remodelling of the crystalline size and shape of the gypsum calcium sulphate dihydrate. The combination of pressure and temperature on the moist gypsum calcium sulphate dihydrate changes the physical properties of the gypsum calcium sulphate dihydrate, resulting in a sheet which, on leaving the compression zone, is broken up into hard flakes.
