Abstract

The invention concerns a compression procedure for a video signal, especially for encoding of a live video signal for a narrow transmission channel. In the procedure, the image field of the video signal being transmitted is divided into image regions and a new image region is processed in such a way that it is compared with one image region at a time with a reference image field saved in a previous image memory 3 and information concerning only the altered image region is sent via the transmission channel to the receiver. According to the invention, a number of sent image fields are saved in an associative memory 10 and this number of saved image fields is used as a possible source for the estimation of the altered image regions, wherein a search is made among them for at least approximately corresponding altered image regions, whose position is communicated as a code word to the receiver, and on the basis of this code word the estimate of the altered image field is sought among the number of corresponding image fields saved in the receiver's memory and placed in the correct image field for reconstruction of the image field. <IMAGE>
