Abstract

The process serves the production of tubular copper or copper alloy chills or moulds for use in a continuous steel casting system and includes a first stage, which comprises the formation of a sloping shoulder 3 at the one end of a tubular blank of rectilinear axis through the use of plastic cold deformation; a second stage, which comprises shaping of the blank such that it acquires a bent shape; a third stage, according to which a mandrel 12 is introduced into the interior of the blank 11, which mandrel has an outer shape and dimension matching the outer shape and dimension of the chill to be produced; a fourth stage, which comprises the blank being led through a die on a draw plate 15 such that the material of the blank is deformed to such effect that the inner surface of the blank conforms precisely to the outer surface of the mandrel; a fifth stage, which is executed after the blank has passed through the die and comprises an essentially axial force being applied to the mandrel in the opposite direction relative to the force applied in previous stages, whilst the one end of the blank may enter into engagement with stop sectors 21 placed beneath the die. <IMAGE>
