Abstract
A synthetic polyethylene wax having a low molecular weight of 250-3000 and a density of 0.930-0.950 is prepared by means of a high pressure process at a pressure of at least 800 bar using a carbonyl compound such as acetaldehyde as the chain transfer agent. The resulting wax, with incorporated CO, has good miscibility in hot melt systems and can be distilled for the purpose of removing light ends, increasing its density and crystallinity and improving its thermal stability.
