Abstract

The invention concerns a general adaptive detection method for quantized signals which have a nominal value at different times which form a finite number of discrete states, by which method a signal's discrete state at a certain time is interpreted by comparison of the signal's sample value with a group of reference figures, on the basis of which the signal state is identified. A basic principle for the method is adaptive correction of the values of the reference figures used in the detection in a direction towards the actual signal state of the detected signal, for example by means of a method for grouping k-averages or self-configuring pattern maps. This is made possible by the fact that although the transmission path may cause even large random changes and distortions, these changes are however relatively continual in time. <IMAGE>
