Abstract

The invention relates to a method for microbiological purification of polluted water, especially water polluted with chlorophenols, with the aid of microorganisms which degrade the pollutants, with the water to be purified being passed through a biofilter which collects the pollutants in such a way that the water is significantly purified and the pollutants are accumulated in the filter, and microorganisms which have previously been immobilized in the biofilter are brought to degrade the pollutants collected in the biofilter. The purification of large quantities of water will be faster and the size of the device smaller because the relatively slow biodegradation can be carried out as a separate second stage of the method. The method is particularly suitable for purification of cold water, the purification of which is normally difficult, since the circulation water of the reactor can be heated during the biodegradation stage to a temperature level which is suitable for bio-activity. The invention also relates to a new microorganism applicable in the method, and a solid carrier applicable as a biofilter, on which microorganisms degrading chlorophenols have been immobilized.
