Abstract

Continuous process for producing one or more layers of surface-coated glass plate. Molten glass 19 is poured over the bottom of the furnace 20 and made to flow to the surface of a tin bath 15, whence it moves to rollers 22 and proceeds through a glass cooling furnace 12 and a cooling department 13. A non-oxidizing atmosphere is maintained in a department 18 by feeding gas to this from pipes 23 for the maintenance of an overpressure. No steps are taken to control the atmosphere in the glass cooling furnace; accordingly, the oxidizing atmosphere in the furnace is constituted by air. When the glass runs beneath a distributing device 27, it is treated with a silane-containing gas to form a silicon coating, and when it passes under a distributing device 28, it is treated with a metal compound containing oxidizing gas to form a surface coating of metal oxide. Before the silicon-coated glass reaches the distributing device 28, a silicon oxide layer is formed. <IMAGE>
