The invention relates to a method for producing wrapping paper for cigarette filters. Filter wrapping paper made by this method does not stick to the lips.

In the manufacture of cigarettes, it is common practice to apply a coating to the material used at the end of the cigarette to reduce or prevent its adhesion to the lips; i.e. to prevent the cigarette filter coating from coming into contact with the smoker's lips from adhering to the lips. Several different methods are currently known in the art for coating the head of cigarettes to prevent or at least reduce the adhesion of the cigarette wrapper or material to the smoker's lips during use. British Patent 328,147 is directed to a cigarette having a tip portion or head that prevents adhesion to the lips, wherein the coating is applied to preselected areas of the tip portion 20. U.S. Patent No. 288,151 discloses a cigarette wrapper having a coating in preselected areas that is applied in a pattern. U.S. Patent 2,033,791 discloses a waterproof tip for cigarettes that is "lip-proof" and only preselected areas of cigarette paper are coated and this coating is applied to reinforce the paper. Other patents describing coating the wrapper to prevent it from sticking to the lips include U.S. Patent 2,217,527, U.S. Patent 2,159,704, and U.S. Patent 2,149,896.

The method of the present invention provides a material for the tip portion of a cigarette that does not adhere to the lips. This also provides material for the tip portion of the cigarette having air permeable holes in the tip portion material for mixing air into the tobacco smoke stream at the filter end of the cigarette 35.

The present invention thus relates to a method of making a wrapping paper for cigarette filters, in which method a) a sheet of filter wrapping paper is passed through a means in which a non-stick coating is added to the sheet in a preselected pattern, b) the coating is dried and the coated material is to form an insert into it. The method is characterized in that the means for applying the coating to the sheet consists of two cooperating rolls 10, one roll being a pressure roll and the other a gravure roll having an un engraved surface in predetermined areas, said rolls being mounted in contact with each other to receive filter wrapping paper therebetween. The method according to the invention prevents clogging of the holes by the coating material and eliminates other problems which occur when adding holes and thereby shortening the downtime of the manufacturing process, cleaning times of the machine and obtaining a uniform perforated product.

Other features of the present invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description.

The method of the invention provides a material for a tip portion of cigarettes, comprising: a sheet of tip material; 25 a coating covering the preselected areas of the plate which does not adhere to the lips and the holes in the plate with said holes located in areas not covered by said coating.

It should be noted that the following examples illustrating the invention are in no way limiting, and various variations within the scope of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette tip material according to the invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a cigarette using the tip portion material of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective schematic representation of a preferred embodiment for making the cigarette tip material of Fig. 1.

Figure 1 shows a sheet of material 2 of a cigarette tip with predetermined areas 4 coated with a substance which does not adhere to the lips. These anti-adhesive coatings include ethylcellulose, nitrocellulose, or any of the well-known agents used to prevent the cigarette from adhering to the smoker's lips. The coating can be applied in different patterns and in the figure it is shown applied as separate parallel strips running in the longitudinal direction of the paper and, as shown in Figure 2, in the finished product extending around the filter 6 of the cigarette 5. The uncoated areas in the tip paper are also formed as discrete parallel straight lines with holes 8 and also surrounding the filter 6 (as shown in Figure 2), so that when a cigarette is smoked, air enters the tobacco smoke stream 20 as it passes through the filter 6.

In a preferred method of making the tip portion of a cigarette filter according to the invention, as shown in Figure 3, unprinted paper 10 for the tip portion is fed to two synchronized rolls 12 and 14. Roll 12 is a pressure roll 25 and roll 14 is a gravure roll with pre-engraved areas with engraved areas. marked 16a, 16b and 16c so that as the roll 14 passes through the container 20, the coating 22 formed thereon does not move or adhere to the engraved areas of the rotogravure cylinder 30. Thus, as the sheet 10 passes between the rollers 12 and 14, the coating is applied to the lower surface of the paper forming the tip portion in preselected areas. The tip-forming paper 10 exiting the coating step is then passed to an imager to dry the coating. The dryer comprises an air blower 40 for heating the air 41 and directing it onto paper 10 therethrough. It should be noted that the dryer is shown for demonstration purposes only and all drying means known in the art may be used. The paper 10 is then fed to two synchronized rolls 24 and 26. The roll 26 is provided with two parallel rings 18a and 18b, the rings having a plurality of spikes 28 which, as the cooperating rollers 24 and 26 rotate, pierce the paper 10. It should be noted that the rings 18a and 18b is fitted with the non-engraved portions 10 of the printing cylinder so that as the paper 10 passes between the cooperating rollers 24 and 26 and the spikes 28 penetrate the holes in the paper 10 in the uncoated area of the paper 10. The product exiting the rollers 24 and 26 has an uncoated area with rows of holes marked with nu-15 numbers 18c and 18d and a coated area 30. The paper for the tip portion of the cigarette is thus ready for use with the cigarette filter.

It should be noted that the tip member material may be perforated prior to coating and that numerous other modifications may be made to the present embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention.

A method according to claim 1, characterized in that said gravure roll is in contact with the coating material. A method according to claim 1, characterized in that the perforating means comprises two cooperating rollers, the second roll being a pressure roll and the second roll having a ring 25 formed by spikes, said ring being arranged parallel to the non-engraved area of said rotogravure roll so that said the perforation is formed in the uncoated area of the wrapping paper.
