Description

The invention relates to a strain relief device for a cable.
BACKGROUND
It is a known problem in industrial environments that electrical cables, which connect 5 electrical vehicles and machinery to a power source, are prone to damage. Especially sockets and plugs are quite vulnerable if the connected cable is subjected to excessive pulling. Industrial electrical cables are expensive and replacing broken ones stops work and thus causes even more expense. Also, damaged electrical cables could pose a hazard. At the very least, a disconnected electrical cable 10 causes a power failure. These problems are quite evident especially in mining because conditions encountered are extreme, and it is common that the machinery necessitating electrical cable connections has to be moved frequently. Similar problems are prominent also when using water hoses in mining environments. Hereafter when mentioning a cable, it could be for transferring electricity or water or other 15 liquid or gas.
To prevent harmful pulling on connected electrical cables and other aforementioned problems, cable pulling socks (sometimes called cable grips) are commonly used in mines. The cable pulling socks are primarly designed for pulling cables through ducts and other structures. They comprise a sock part, that is a tubular form of wo20 ven wire netting. On the one end of the sock is a pulling head. The cable to be pulled is placed inside the sock. The diameter of the sock will decrease when extended and increased when it is contracted so as to respectively grip and release the cable inside the sock. Thus, it can be used for pulling cables. When the cable pulling sock is used for strain relief, a hole is cut in the side of the sock and the end of the cable 25 (the plug end) is pulled out from the sock and connected to the socket. The pulling head is fixed somewhere in such a way that when undesired pulling on the cable occurs, the pulling head stops the pulling before any force is exerted on the plug or the socket. One example of the cable pulling sock (the cable grip) is disclosed in the patent publication US1994674.
However, there are many problems associated with cable pulling socks. The sock will fray especially near the hole and there will be metal wires sticking out which could cause injuries when the cable is handled. The cable pulling socks must therefore be replaced quite often. Also, assembling the cable pulling sock is cumbersome and may require some special tools. There is a possibility of the sock becoming
20187006 prh 31 -10- 2018 loose, allowing the cable to move inside the sock. Often, the outer structures of the cable pulling socks are of such a quality that when the disconnected cable is moved, the sock part may hit obstacles and gather dirt.

DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FIGURES
The embodiments in the following description are given as examples only and someone skilled in the art can carry out the basic idea of the invention also in some other 20 way than what is described in the description. Though the description may refer to a certain embodiment or embodiments in several places, this does not mean that the reference would be directed towards only one described embodiment or that the described characteristic would be usable only in one described embodiment. The individual characteristics of two or more embodiments may be combined and new 25 embodiments of the invention may thus be provided.
A device for strain relief of a cable comprises a fixing body, at least one attaching member and an anchoring wire. In figures 1 - 3 one embodiment of a fixing body is described. In this example the cable is an electrical cable.
20187006 prh 31 -10- 2018
Figure 1 shows an example of a fixing body 100. In this embodiment the body is partly cylindrical. The cross section of the body is a circle. Of course, other shapes for the body can be used. The fixing body has two ends: a first surface 101 and a second surface 102, and a side surface 103 surrounding the fixing body between 5 the first surface and the second surface. In this example the second surface is sloped, and the first surface is flat, and the plane of the first surface is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the side surface. The second surface is sloped in a such way that the thickness of the fixing body on the second surface grows towards the first surface. In some embodiments said surfaces can comprise several shapes, 10 for example the second surface can have a flat part and a sloped part.
The fixing body 100 has a cable hole 104 for the electrical cable. The cable body has a cable hole surface 105 and openings on the first surface 102 and the second surface 103. On the cable hole surface is a cable gripping shape. In this embodiment the cable gripping shape is a thread-shaped groove. Naturally the cable gripping 15 shape can be implemented many different ways. It is essential that the cable grepping gripping shape holds the electrical cable firmly in place when the cable is placed in the cable hole and the device comprising the fixing body is in use. This means that the held cable cannot be moved easily in relation to the fixing body. In this embodiment the cable hole is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the fixing body. In 20 some embodiments the axis of the cable hole and the longitudinal axis of the fixing body convergent.
In the fixing body 100 is at least one wire hole 106. The wire hole is parallel to the cable hole 104. The wire hole is for an anchoring wire. In some embodiments there are two wire holes. In that case two anchoring wires could be used.
The fixing body 100 comprise two parts: a first fixing body part 107 and a second fixing body part 108 and these parts are separable from each other and connectable to each other so as to form the fixing body. When the parts are connected to each other, there is a seam 109 between parts. In this embodiment the seam is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the fixing body. The first fixing body part and the second 30 fixing body part are configured in such a way that when the said parts are separated from each other the electrical cable can be placed in the cable hole 104. By separation is meant here that said parts are at least partly disconnected. In order for the cable to be placed in the cable hole, both parts of the fixing body must provide a part of the cable hole i.e. they must contain some part of the cable hole surface 105.
The first fixing body part has two first fixing body part inner surfaces that are separated by the cable hole surface and the second fixing body part has two second
20187006 prh 31 -10- 2018 fixing body part inner surfaces that are separated by the cable hole surface. In some embodiments there are one or more size adjustment plates that are configured to be placed between one first fixing body part inner surface and corresponding second fixing body part inner surface for increasing the size of the cross section of the cable hole. By using size adjustment plates, bigger electrical cables (i.e. the diameter of the cable is greater) could be placed in the device.
There is at least one attaching member for attaching the first fixing body part 107 and the second fixing body part 108 to each other. In this embodiment the fixing body 100 further comprise at least one attaching hole 110 having one opening on the side surface 103 of the first fixing part and another opening on the side surface of the second fixing part. Of course, attaching holes could be placed in a such way that one opening is on the first surface of the first fixing part and another opening on the first surface of the second fixing part or one opening is on the second surface of the first fixing part and another opening is on the second surface of the second fixing part. The attaching member is configured to be in the attaching hole. The attaching member could be for example a screw or a bolt or similar. What is essential that the attaching member keeps the first fixing body part and the second fixing body part tightly interconnected and at the same time the electrical cable between them in the cable hole 104 is similarly kept in its place. The attaching holes are configured to pass the cable hole and the wire hole 106. This means that the attaching hole must go through the first fixing body part inner surface and corresponding second fixing body part inner surface. If the size adjustment plate is used, it has interlocking shapes for the attaching members (and attaching holes) such as a hole or a notch or similar.
Figure 2 shows the fixing body 100 described on the figure 1. The first surface 101 is in figure 2 upwards and a second surface 102 is downwards. The fixing body is to be placed over the electrical cable in a such way that the flat first surface is towards the plug end of the electrical cable (i.e. the end that is to be connected to the socket) and the sloped second surface is towards the end of the electrical cable that is connected to an electrical device. It must be noted that above mentioned directions are along the electrical cable (i.e. defined by the cable) and they may not be linear. When the disconnected electrical cable is pulled or otherwise moved, the sloped second surface of the fixing body does not stick to obstacles as a flat surface would. Also, it gathers less refuse or dirt. The cylindrical form of the main body is also beneficial because it similarly allows easier movement of the cable. In this projection two wire holes are visible: a first wire hole 106a and a second wire hole 106b.
20187006 prh 31 -10- 2018
Figure 3 shows the fixing body 100 described on the figure 1 as seen in the direction of longitudinal axis of the fixing body with the first surface 101 visible. The cable hole 104 is on the longitudinal axis of cylindrical body. The first wire hole 106a and the second wire hole 106b are situated symmetrically alongside of the cable hole. The 5 first wire hole is in the first fixing body part 107 and the second wire hole is in the second fixing body part 108. The centres of said holes are on same plane. Of course, there are embodiments where the cable hole and the wire holes could be differently positioned. There are two attaching holes 110 that reach through the first fixing body part and the second fixing body part. In the attaching holes are attaching 10 members 301 that join the fixing body parts to each other. The attaching member could be for example a bolt and a nut pair, but many other arrangements or combinations can be used. Having two wire holes makes it possible to attach the device in different positions. That way the situations where the anchoring wire and the electrical cable would press or squeeze each other when the device in use are avoided.
For example, after attaching the fixing body to the electrical cable, it is noticed that when connecting the electrical cable to the socket the anchoring wire will be situated under the electrical cable. By moving the anchoring wire to another wire hole this is avoided. Two or more wire holes can also be used, when the electrical cable is very heavy, and several anchoring wires are needed.
If the cable is for gas or liquid, the cable gripping shape could be adaptable. If the pressure inside the cable changes, the shape, stiffness, diameter or other properties of the cable could change. If, for example, the pressure inside the cable decreases, the diameter of the cable could shrink, and the fixing body may not hold the cable as firmly as before the change in pressure. In that case, the adaptable cable gripping 25 shape may increase its size and thus continue gripping the cable firmly. The adapting arrangement for the cable gripping shape could be mechanical and contain springs or similar parts.
Figure 4 shows an example of an anchoring wire 400. The anchoring wire has a first end 402 and a second end 401. At the second end is an anchoring arrangement 30 404 and at the first end is a locking mechanism 403. The anchoring wire further comprise a wire 405 and a sleeve part 406. The anchoring wire is configured to be in the wire hole in such a way that the locking mechanism prevents the anchoring wire from separating from the fixing body. The sleeve part is configured to fit inside the wire hole and it serves to protect the wire hole from the rubbing effects of the 35 wire. The locking mechanism comprises some parts that are wider than the smallest diameter of the wire hole. In some advantageous embodiment the opening of the
20187006 prh 31 -10- 2018 wire hole on the second surface of the fixing body is shaped in a such way that the second end of the anchoring wire fits inside the fixing body (see Fig 1). In some embodiments at least said wider parts are configured to be detachable from the anchoring wire for the installation of the anchoring wire. Of course, the anchoring wire can be fixedly installed. In this embodiment the anchoring arrangement is a loop, but other arrangements can be used.
Figure 5 shows a second example of a fixing body 500 according to an embodiment where a first part of fixing body 501 and a second part of fixing body 502 are separated. The fixing body further comprises a cable hole 506, a wire hole 509 and an 10 attaching hole 505. In this embodiment the fixing body parts are symmetrical i.e.
they are of the same size. The cable hole is divided over the both body parts i.e. both body parts have a groove, the cross section of which is a half circle. On the cable hole surfaces are cable gripping shapes 508. In this embodiment the cable gripping shape is a thread-shaped groove when the fixing body parts are connected.
Of course, other shapings that grip the cable can be used. The configuration of the cable gripping shapes depends the type and properties of the cable to hold. The first part of fixing body comprises inner surface 503 that is separated by the cable hole into two parts 503a and 503b. The second part of the fixing body comprises a similar inner surface. When the first part of fixing body and the second part of fixing body 20 are attached to each other, the corresponding inner surface parts are placed against each other. A size adjustment plate 504 can be placed between one first fixing body part inner surface and corresponding second fixing body part inner surface.
Figure 6 shows an example of a device 600 in accordance with an embodiment in use. The cable in this example is an electric cable but the device is applicable for 25 other types of cables. The device comprises a fixing body 601 and an anchoring wire 602. The device is installed to prevent harmful pulling on electrical cable 603.
The electrical cable has a plug 604 at one end of the cable. The plug is connected to a socket 605 for providing electricity to some electrical device. It must be noted that other types of cables also have plugs. The fixing body has a first end 607 and 30 a second end 608. The first end and the second end correspond to the first surface and the second surface. The electrical cable is fixed to the fixing body. The first end is towards the plug end of the electrical cable and the second end is towards the other end of the electrical cable (the end which is connected to the machine). The anchoring wire is attached to the fixing body in a similar way as described earlier.
The anchoring wire has an anchoring arrangement that is configured to be attached to some fixture such as wall or support pillar or similar structure. In this example the anchoring arrangement is attached to a hook 606 which is fixed to the wall. The device is implemented in such a way that the length of the anchoring wire between the anchoring arrangement and the first end of the fixing body is shorter than the length of the electrical cable between the first end of the fixing body and the plug of 5 the electrical cable. When the electrical cable is pulled, the anchoring wire between the anchoring arrangement and the first end of the fixing body will tighten before the electrical cable between the first end of the fixing body and the plug. The tightened anchoring wire counters the pulling and thus prevents damage to the plug or the socket. Depending on how high the pulling forces are, the device may be con10 structed to correspond to them at least to some degree.
Some advantageous embodiments of the method and device according to the invention have been described above. The invention is however not limited to the embodiments described above, but the inventive idea can be applied in numerous ways within the scope of the claims.
